Linux has a reputation in some quarters for being tough to use, something mainly for technical people. This somewhat undeserving reputation no doubt comes from the early history of the operating system, where it was most certainly true.

I recently spent the better part of a week working with the latest version of the open-source GNOME graphical desktop environment on Linux. I've decided that the only way to explain the regression of GNOME over the years is that Microsoft and/or SCO moles have infiltrated the GNOME leadership in a covert effort to destroy any possibility that Linux could compete with Windows on the desktop.

Born in Mexico City, Miguel de Icaza was the driving force behind the creation of the Gnome free software desktop, and co-founded the open source company Ximian, bought last August by Novell. In July 2001, he helped start another ambitious project, Mono: a free implementation for GNU/Linux of Microsoft's .Net framework. He talks to Glyn Moody about Mono's progress, how Ximian was bought by Novell, and why he is so scared of Microsoft's Longhorn.

In the beginning, there was Linus. He said, let there be Linux, and Linux was there. Actually he wrote some code. Then there was Miguel. He said, let there be GNOME. Actually he announced it on IRC. But then GNOME was there. As many years passed, both Linux and GNOME grew in size and complexity at niceness. And so it is that we have on our doorsteps, Linux 2.6, and GNOME 2.6.

The GNOME project is expected to release version 2.6 of its open source Linux desktop Wednesday, which supporters call a major step forward in offering choice among desktop players.

GNOME is one of two principal open source projects vying to be the Linux Desktop technology of choice. The other main Linux Desktop project, KDE, released its latest version a few months ago.

A couple of days before the release of version 2.6 of the GNOME desktop, the server hosting the main GNOME website and several other gnome.org sites appears to have been compromised, according to a posting to one of the GNOME mailing lists.

GNOME is one of the two main desktop environments used by Linux distributions; the other is KDE.

Owen Taylor, who works for Linux maker Red Hat, said evidence of an intrusion had been discovered on March 23.

"At the present time, we think that the released gnome sources and the gnome source code repository are unaffected," Taylor said.

Tom Adelstein, longtime Linux advocate and consultant has spent the last year working closely with state, local, and federal government open source software initiatives. Tom launched Government Forge, a Web site devoted to state and local governments interested in Linux and open source which is newly part of the Open Source Software Institute. In November 2002, Tom initiated the legislation for Open Source Software in Texas which resulted in Senate Bill 1579 filed by State Senator John Carona.

This release of GNOME's spreadsheet is _huge_. We've spent the last 2 months squashing bugs, getting the docs in shape, and polishing up the text importer. Trying to summarise the NEWS entries is daunting.

Gnome grew up for use with Linux, but Sun and others embraced the technology in 2000 for use with Unix. It competes with another interface called KDE. CDE still is the default for Solaris, but users may elect to use Gnome, a Sun representative said.

While a 2-year-old project to develop an open-source version of Microsoft Corp.'s .Net Framework is making progress, it's still a long way from prime time.

The Mono Project incorporates key .Net-compliant components, including a C# compiler, a Common Language Runtime just-in-time compiler and a growing set of class libraries, including ASP.Net and ADO.Net. But officials at the project's leader, Ximian Inc., said the group is still incorporating new features being added by Microsoft into the next version of the .Net development platform, dubbed Whidbey.

Across the board, KDE seems designed to err on the side of complexity, and GNOME on that of simplicity. To this end, configuration options tend to be more bountiful and nearer the surface in KDE than in GNOME.
