Based on discussions with a number of individuals, Linux Online developed an
implementation for our internet site that we hope will carry us for the next
two or three years. Outlined below are the systems we have built and a
description of how you are accessing our site.
We would like to acknowledge the contributions made by the following vendors,
without whom this would not have been possible. Without exception, we
believe that each of these vendors provide high quality equipment; equipment
that we trust to handle our most critical applications. We are confident that
you will find the same level of quality and support for your computing needs.

Internet service (dual T1 -- 3.088 megabits/sec) is purchased from AT&T
Canada and is provided via their POP in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. This is
connected via Bell Canada into a Cisco router and a 10Mb/s ethernet to the
Pentium 233 MMX machine known as router.invlogic.com. The router is connected
by a Linksys EtherFast 10/100 switch to the rest of the network. Advanced
Internet Technologies (AIT) provides secondary DNS service from their location
in North Carolina, USA.
The two web servers and one database server are identical. Dual Pentium III
1GHz, SuperMicro P3TDE6-G motherboards, SC750-A chassis, 1Gb of PC133 RAM
dual Seagate 18G Barracuda drives using software RAID1 (mirroring),
Intel EtherExpress Pro/100 ethernet cards, Toshiba 40X SCSI CDRom and Ecrix
VXA-1 tape drives.
Identical in most respects to the systems above is the server for ftp.linux.org.
Using an SC801-A chassis and mounting 10 IBM Ultrastor 36 Gb drives in addition
to dual 9G Medalist drives providing the root partition, this system is intended
to mirror the Linux distributions, archive sites, etc as it becomes available
on the net. Backups are provided by an Ecrix VXA 999Gb tape library. Currently
this system is offline due to hardware failures and limited bandwidth. It needs
more drive space and better net access to be useful.
Our CVS repository and development testing servers are both on Dual Pentium II
500MHz/512k cache systems with 1Gb of PC133 RAM, dual Seagate 18G drives with
VXA-1 tape drives providing backup. There are also 3 other similar servers
providing non-essential services such as mail processing, fax reception and
transmission, etc. There are 4 workstations of various configurations using
most of the same components above.
In order to enhance the reliability of the services provided by Linux Online,
we have installed a UPS supplied by American Power Conversion. The new
Symmetra 8kVA unit provides regulated power to all the computer and support
equipment on our site. The combination of the main UPS and an extention frame
will provide us with 3 hours of battery power in the event of a local power
disturbance.
